Anybody who holds DMX's classic "No Sunshine" close to their heart likely remembers the film Exit Wounds. For those that don't, it was essentially a crime slash martial arts thriller starring Steven Segal and X as unlikely allies, with the latter having a chance to unveil a surprisingly brutal combat efficacy. While the flick wasn't exactly a critical darling, it resonated much harder with hip-hop fans, particularly those loyal to DMX's then-mighty movement.
Speaking personally, having watched Exit Wounds far younger than I probably should have, it's impossible not to associate the film with the epic teaser that used to play on TV -- a teaser that prominently featured a brand new DMX single called "No Sunshine." A darker take on the Bill Withers classic, X's variant remains one of the rapper's slept-on classics. Throughout the lengthy track, X alternates between a chanted delivery and a more dexterous one, weaving a haunting cautionary tale ripe with violent imagery -- and let's be honest, who does that better than DMX?
This track is for everyone who remembers watching Exit Wounds, especially those who heard "No Sunshine" in the trailer and proceeded to seek out the song by any means necessary. Bonus points if you actually own the soundtrack.
