Last week, DJ Quik dropped off "That Getter," a collaboration with David Blake that was the first taste we got of his upcoming Midnight Life project. Today, the album's first official single has dropped. "Life Jacket" features fellow Compton veteran Suga Free and the younger Dom Kennedy.
Though "Life Jacket" features the Zapp-style vocals that were all the craze in G-funk's golden era, it's a tad more modern-sounding than "That Getter," thanks to a beat that's a little more lighthearted and radio-ready than most of Quik's catalog. Kennedy gifts the party track a great verse that has us missing his solo output -- hopefully new tracks are on the way from him as well.
