Crazy Rich Asians is expected to hold on to the top spot at the box office as it enters its second weekend in theaters. The romantic comedy is estimated to reel in $25 million at 3,526 combines North American locations.
This would mean that the film experiences a 6% decline from its debut weekend—a stellar feat for any film, especially a romantic comedy.
Last weekend, the film, starring Constance Wu, opened up with $26.5 million. So far, it has earned $60 million worldwide. Warner Brothers has already announced the development of a sequel for the film, outfitted with a cast that also includes Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, and Ken Jeong.
The film, directed by Jon M. Chu is a screen play written by Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim, adapted from the 2013 novel by Kevin Kwan.
Elsewhere in the box office, Melissa McCarthy’s The Happytime Murders is expected to bow a No. 3 , pulling in a modest $10.1 million after earning $3.95 million on Friday. If this is the case, it will mark the worst opening for any movie led by McCarthy. Currently, the film has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 22%.
Wanrer Brothers’ The Meg is expected to slide in at No. 2 with a $12 million third weekend. Since its debut, the sci-fi shark thriller, starring Jason Statham, has earned $95.5 million at the domestic box office and has capped off at $368 million worldwide so far.
