Colin Kaepernick supporters have long awaited the former 49ers quarterback's return to the league. Reports that a number of NFL teams have been showing interest in signing Kaepernick have been swirling around for months. Jay Gruden, Washington Redskins coach, fueled such reports when he announced that he had "seriously discussed" inviting  Kaepernick to play for his team after they had lost their first and second-string signal callers. According to an insider who spoke to ESPN, Kaepernick is unlikely to join the Washington Redskins in the near future, or any other NFL team for that matter, because none have reached out to him.

Gruden reportedly told ESPN that his concern about Kaepernick's knowledge of the team's offensive scheme has made him hesitant to sign him in the past. "When you’re talking about a backup quarterback this late in the game you want someone with a similar skill set to the quarterback you have, ”Gruden said. “Not that Colin can’t do some of the things we’ve talked about, but we want someone with a little more familiarity.”

It appears that the Washington Redskins chose to sign Mark Sanchez in favour of Kaepernick. Sanchez, a former New York Jets signee is well known for his role in an infamous play popularly referred to as the "Butt Fumble" where he fumbled the ball after colliding with the rear end of his teammate Brandon Moore in a 2012 game against the New England Patriots. The Skins also signed Josh Johnson, a player who previously served as backup to Kaepernick during his time in San Fransisco.
