Green Bay Packers head coach, Mike McCarthy, and Houston Texans head coach, Bill O'Brien, will reportedly be deposed as part of Colin Kaepernick's grievance against NFL owners for collusion, according to lawyer Amy Dash.
Dash mentions that both McCarthy and O'Brien will be questioned as witnesses regarding comments made about the possibility of signing Colin Kaepernick after their starting quarterbacks suffered long-term injuries.
When Packers QB Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone a few weeks ago, Mike McCarthy was adamant about the organization's faith in backup Brett Hundley, despite the fact he has never played in an NFL game.
According to Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith, McCarthy responded to a question pertaining to the possibility of signing Kaepernick,
"Did you just listen to the question I just answered? I've got three years invested in Brett Hundley, two years invested in Joe Callahan, the quarterback room is exactly where it needs to be. OK? We're fortunate to have a great quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, we're committed to the path we're on. We need to play better as a football team. Brett Hundley will start this week and Joe Callahan will be the backup."
The Texans lost their star rookie QB Deshaun Watson for the season, due to a torn ACL just last week. When asked about bringing in Kaepernick as a replacement Bill O'Brien said,
"Colin Kaepernick is a good football player, hasn't played in a while. These things are going to continue to be discussed," per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.
The Texans went on to sign Josh Johnson as well as TJ Yates instead, while starting Watson's backup, Tom Savage.
In addition to those two head coaches, several NFL owners including the Dallas Cowboys' Jerry Jones, Houston Texans' Bob McNair and New England Patriots' Bob Kraft, will be deposed and asked to turn over all cell phone records and emails in relation to the Colin Kaepernick collusion case, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Other owners will also be deposed, according to Schefter, but Jones, McNair and Kraft have been confirmed for now. Kaepernick filed a grievance under the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement for collusion against owners in the league a few weeks ago.
The filing alleges that NFL owners "have colluded to deprive Mr. Kaepernick of employment rights in retaliation for Mr. Kaepernick's leadership and advocacy for equality and social justice and his bringing awareness to peculiar institutions still undermining racial equality in the United States.”
