Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez turned up for their weigh-in, within the delimitations of their contract. The Gennady Golovkin that showed up for the press conference, is the best version of the fighter Abel Sanchez has ever trained, according to the man himself. Believe what you want, but Canelo's camp is taking an offensive approach to this fight, whereas the old Saul Alvarez relied upon a counterpunching strategy to see his hand raised. But anything can change within the opening rounds of a fight, I need not remind you.
What makes this grudge match particularly interesting is that both men declined their option to embark on a media tour to promote the fight, focusing instead on their training methodology and preparedness. Friday's press conference was their first face to face encounter since they met to negotiate, then renegotiate their PPV take.
As is the custom in boxing, both competitors were forced into a staged staredown, after which Golovkin stated, "All I could feel was fear from them, and I think they did it (rush the stage) so I couldn't look into his eyes and he couldn't look into mine." His trainer Abel Sanchez seemed to agree with that statement. "What you saw on the stage was Canelo's world collapsing around him," he added.
