Bruce Arians came out of retirement recently so that he could take the head coaching job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs have been a sorry franchise since making it to the Super Bowl back in 2002 and Arians is hoping he can change the team's fortunes. Arians has been seen as a progressive coach over the last few years due to his willingness to hire women. For example, as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Arians hired Jen Welter as an assistant. While attending the league's annual meeting on Tuesday, Arians was asked about whether or not he sees more women making their way to the NFL.
"I think back to the best teachers I've ever had, most of them are female," Arians said. "Football, we're glorified school teachers. So, why not take a great teacher of any gender and let them help your players?"
Arians has added two women to his coaching staff already in Lori Locust and Maral Javadifar. The Bucs coach explained that when it comes to gender, he simply doesn't care.
"They're good fits for what we need. The fact that their gender is different -- who gives a sh*t? They're good coaches," Arians explained. "If they can't do [the job], you get fired like everybody else."
The Buccaneers, as well as the rest of the NFL, will begin their regular season in September.
