“True Lies” is the second single off Black Milk’s highly-anticipated album, FEVER. The Detroit rapper/producer, goes in over undulating, multi-layered strings, recalling lie after lie he was told growing up. In particular, he presents the realities of growing up in his neighbourhood and his experience with education; his truth varies from the ones forced upon him.
The song is a toe-tapping showcase of the production as much as it is the vocals, with Black Milk finding spacious pockets to hop in momentarily before letting the instrumental lead the charge. The varying elements act symbiotically, resulting in an upbeat and uplifting track. You can continue listening to “True Lies,” and the previous single “Laugh Now Cry Later,” as you patiently wait for FEVER, out February 23.
That’s why we hated school
I guess I’m different
Had me venting bout my teachers
But my preacher wasn’t no different
