Faster than you can utter "itty bitty bitch" Blac Youngsta has emerged to hit you with the new album. Somehow the rapper managed to take a break from swimming in a Scrooge McDuckian pile of money and book some studio sessions. You might recall the album's notorious single "Booty," which has solidified itself as a quintessential anthem for strip clubs across the South and beyond. In fact, the single's magnetism was enough to catch the ear of Chris Brown, who decided to lend his vocal talents to an upcoming remix; after all, he too is a fan of the booty.
Yet behind the playful sexual promiscuity, Blac Youngsta has some serious artistic depth. The opening trifecta of songs finds the rapper coming through with some genuine honesty. "Strength" contains some powerful writing from the Youngsta, as he reflects on the tragedy of having to bury his brother. In fact, 223 is a surprisingly well-rounded project, with a healthy mix of bangers for both the club and the streets. The French Montana assisted "Right There' is another addition to the flute-banger canon, while features from Travis Scott, Yo Gotti, and Lil Boat round out the project.
Forget about the antics and give 223 a chance. The stunt prince wouldn't have sounded out of place on Cash Money circa 1999; imagine a parallel world with Blac Youngsta on Mannie Fresh production, sharing the mic with Juvenile and Turk. Fantasies aside, he's done well.
