Anybody who listened to Big K.R.I.T.'s 4Eva Is A Mighty Long Time knows that it's a powerful piece of music, made all the more by the struggle behind making it. When asked about his biggest hurdles in bringing 4Eva to life, K.R.I.T. replies with brutal honesty. "Going broke," he says, smile unwavering. "When you invest in yourself you invest in yourself, and things gotta be paid for, you gotta take care of it. It's like...that was one of things I realized, if I wanted to make this happen I would have to put my all into it. Not only my mental mind creativity, but financially. It was shocking." However, the experience gave him a new perspective on his materialistic mentality, and K.R.I.T. soon came to realize that all of the cars and chains ultimately "meant nothing."
Elaborating, he explains that love of music kept him going through the hard fiscal times. "There still was the excitement to make music there, although financially things weren't the way I wanted them to be...Everything got simple...It really made more sense, why I made music at that point. I wasn't chasing anything, if anything I was trying to survive on the very basic minimum and just keep creating music. And that was mind blowing."
It's an inspirational bit of wisdom from one of the game's most underrated, and K.R.I.T.'s humility most definitely shines through on his latest album.
