Azealia Banks is drawing a lot of negative attention these days.  Last week her and another female rapper, Angel Haze exchanged heated words on Twitter which led to a few diss records from the artists being dropped.  Later, famed celeb blogger Perez Hilton chimed in and was siding with Haze, this angered Banks who then referred to the openly gay Hilton as a “messy faggot”.  Now, GLAAD has issued a statement, and although Banks tried to back pedal with some of her comments, the group is upset with her using that inflammatory slur.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) says that although Azealia tweeted that she does not use the term to denote gay males, the activist group is still upset with her sending such a tweet with her young followers reading it.

In a statement GLAAD issued it reads: “Regardless of her intent or her personal definition, what matters is the meaning given to that word by those who hear it, and the damage it causes when they do.  Undoubtedly there are gay kids who follow her on Twitter who hear this word in an entirely different context. This word is used almost universally by bullies, often as part of a larger verbal or physical assault. This word hurts those kids, no matter what Banks meant by it.”

The Yung Rapunxel has tweeted about GLAAD’s statement, and does not seem remorseful, “Glaad and all these others need to give it a break...Picking and choosing when to be offended.”   Looks like Perez Hilton should not be expecting an apology anytime soon.
