Blood Orange's new album Negro Swan is corralling music fans from all corners of the market. On "Chewing Gum" he starts the proceedings with a voice recording of Project Pat giving a lecture on diamond fronts. The sample creates a weird enclosure where Dev finds himself mapping the pre-chorus with his bare hands. His exasperated expression of "tell me what you want from me" defines the beginning of the end for Dev Hynes, and his cohort A$AP Rocky.
A$AP's contributions to the record are monumental. He spits a solid 24-bar verse about the gag order he imposed on himself after parting ways with an unnamed lover. Though a pretty boy in essence, Flacko has become a budding sentimentalist in his late 20s. Of course his version of sentimentality suffuses elements of depravity too. You can't take the harlot out of a Harlemite, and with good measure.
