Though 88Rising has made a splash with the emergence of breakout acts like Rich Brian and the endearing-yet-hard Higher Brothers, the collective is more versatile than initially meets the eye. With their upcoming collaboration album set to drop in the near future, the group has unveiled yet another single from the project, following up the BlocBoy JB / Higher Brothers collaboration "Let It Go." Today, Indonesian singer NIKI lands the spotlight, coming forth with a solo cut by the name of "Warpaint."
While the young singer draws influence from Aalyiah and Destiny's Child, her sound feels more in line with the indie-stylings of Lorde. At least, such is the vibe of the verses, which find NIKI sliding over a summer-infused guitar progression. When the chorus kicks in, however, so does the grandiosity; those adverse to pop synthesizers may clench teeth in unison. Still, the talent is evident, and it'll be interesting to watch NIKI's artistic progression under the 88Rising umbrella.
People like to call me cynical
Pessimistic when it comes to love
I'm not looking for a fuckin' miracle
I'm just looking for a sweeter drug
