Beast Mode: 6 Crazy Mixtape & Album Runs
These days, the line between mixtape and album is thinner than ever, and fans are fairly entitled when it comes to new music. As a result, we're seeing more and more projects being released in a shorter time frame, but there are only a select few who can impress both in terms of quantity and quality. The "run" is something a few artists have been praised for. It's generally a series of projects that mark an important creative spurt for an artist, and one that often creates something of a spectacle. With that being said, some "runs" get a lot of publicity, while some fly under the radar.
Days After Rodeo: A Travis Scott Timeline
It's been seven months since Travis Scott dropped his debut album Rodeo. His buzz grew steadily leading up to the album, and exponentially following the album's release. Of course, touring with Rihanna (on top of relationship rumors) didn't hurt, and Travis has also consistently kept his name in the blogosphere circle thanks to a stream of leaks (both unofficial and official).
10 Joint Projects That May Or May Not Come Out
For every Watch the Throne or What a Time to Be Alive, there are scores of joint hip hop projects borne of one epic late night in the studio that never crystallize into a fully formed release. As fans, we should know better than to let these glimmers of collaborative greatness get our hopes up. But the possibilities are too great to ignore.
Top Tracks: May 9 - May 15
In contrast with the first few months of 2015, when it seemed like our Top Tracks lists were just the same Kanye and Drake tracks rising and falling with each ensuing week, the past few editions have been utter chaos, with the #1 spot changing every week. Staying power is proving difficult to achieve in an increasingly crowded summer playing field-- Beyoncé and Birdman's chart-toppers from two and one week ago, respectively, are nowhere to be found this week, although a few of the lower-ranking tracks stuck it out.
Young Thug Reportedly Sued For Not Recording Promised Sweepstakes Verse
Young Thug had an agreement in place with hip hop merchandiser WeThePlugg.com in which he would add a verse to a song by the would-be winner of one of their promotional contests. Thug was given a $5,000 down payment and another $10,000 upon recording the collaboration. Only thing: he never recorded the collaboration. Now, according to TMZ, WeThePlugg is suing the 23-year-old rapper for $14,500 in damages.
15 Mixtapes That Deserve Grammys
Over the weekend, a petition surfaced that called for Grammy policy changes. The Change.org item argued retail albums should not be the only projects considered for awards, as there have been many important projects released for free over the last few years that were not eligible due to way they were released.
Top Tracks: May 2 - May 8
With VIEWS out in the world and disappointing the majority of those who heard it, there's now a new music void that many rushed to fill this past week as summer rapidly approaches. Desiigner's "Panda" and Drizzy's "One Dance" are still frontrunners for the "song of the summer" title, but there's plenty of time for new entries to rise and compete with them.
Who's Going On Tour? Spring/Summer Tour Round-Up
A lot of big artists are going on tour this spring and summer. You have mega-stars like Beyonce, Rihanna, and Drake. You have rising stars Anderson .Paak and Bas. You have established vets like Snoop Dogg, Maxwell, and Cam'Ron. And everybody in between. It looks like some legendary tours are going down towards the end of the calendar year. Gucci Mane & Friends tour is scheduled to go down when La Flare gets released from prison in September and Kanye West is also shooting to kick off his The Life of Pablo tour in September as well.
Young Thug Is Refreshingly Weird: A “HiTunes” Tour Review
Situated on the corner of 44th Street and Broadway in Times Square, Playstation Theater hosted the second stop of the “Hitunes” Tour on Monday night. I am 25 and I was probably the oldest person who journeyed to the theater (capacity: 2,100) to see Young Thug perform the Thugger songbook front-to-back. Also performing: Thug’s trusty opening act Lil Yachty, the upstart rapper best known best known for his red dreadlocks and rapping over the ice cream truck song and the Rugrats theme song.
Top Tracks: April 25 - May 1
We've officially entered the whirlwind release period of 2016, with hip hop's (arguably) biggest current male and female stars, Drake and Beyoncé, both dropping projects in the past ten days. What's more, Chance 3 should be dropping any moment now.
Review: Bankroll Mafia's "Bankroll Mafia"
Regardless of your opinion of T.I., you have to admit that the majority of the music on his Hustle Gang tapes fell somewhere between uneven at best, and total jumbled mess at worst. The two G.D.O.D. projects featured a solid enough core of Tip, Young Dro, Shad Da God, Young Booke, Doe B (RIP), Spodee, and Trae Tha Truth, but the many attempts to outfit that already seven-strong crew with a wildly varied array of guests made for "too many cooks"-style chaos more often than not.
Charlamagne Tha God Responds To Young Thug's Threat Over Birdman Squabble
Birdman's been trending heavily thanks to his unintentionally-hilarious "interview" with The Breakfast Club.
Top Tracks: April 18 - April 24
What a tumultuous last few days it's been. Reports of Prince's sudden passing rocked us on Thursday, but then hours later we got a new A$AP Ferg album. About 48 hours after that, Lemonade arrived, effectively shutting down everything else on the internet at the time.
Young Thug Threatens Charlamagne After Birdman Interview
Young Thug and Charlamagne Tha God, who have sparred in the past, both have had eventful days. Thug featured heavily on the brand new album from Bankroll Mafia, and as for Charlamagne, he helped contribute to the interview of the year -- as Birdman rolled into the Breakfast Club studio backed by a few young goons and demanded that the morning show hosts treat his name with respek, prompting Charlamagne to ask him if he'd pull up on Rick Ross or Tricky Daddy in the same fashion. "Y'all finished or y'all done?" Birdman then asked rhetorically, before making a dramatic exit.
Listen To Bankroll Mafia's Debut Self-Titled Album
Bankroll Mafia took a hit when one of its founding members, PeeWee Roscoe, was sent to prison. With Roscoe still locked up (free da goat), the Mafia has reemerged as one of the nation's strongest collectives, made up of T.I., Young Thug, Shad da God, London Jae, and Duke. Earlier this week, the group shared a video to its January banger "Out My Face," and today, T.I., Shad, and Jae dropped off a cool stoner's anthem in "Smoke Tree" along with an accompanying video. Now, as promised, the self-titled album is here, and it looks incredible.
Behind The Beat: C4
Most of Atlanta's most successful musicians were born in the city and haven't left since. The transplants that have been able to make it are mostly from the South, as Atlanta is really the only place in the region that provides any opportunity for a career in music. That's where C4 headed after he had seen DJ Spinz, also from the town of Augusta, make a name for himself in the Georgia capital.
Travi$ Scott Debuts Full Version Of His Upcoming Young Thug & Quavo-Featured Record
A couple weeks ago, Travi$ Scott previewed a Young Thug-assisted record at one of his shows, which quickly caught the attention of many fans and had the internet buzzing. While the record still hasn't arrived unfortunately, more new footage has surfaced in the meantime giving us a much better idea of what the record sounds like.
Young Thug Teases New Mixtape "I Came From Nothing 4"
Young Thug has become quite active on Snapchat in the past few months, the platform has become one of the most important marketing tools for an artist, giving inquiring fans a look into daily lives of celebrities and, beyond that, makes the fan feel personally connected with the artist.
Nipsey Hussle & Young Thug To Release "Thuglife" Single Next Week
Nipsey Hussle announced that he'll be dropping a new single with Young Thug called "Thuglife" next Monday.
Top Tracks: April 11 - April 17
Is it just me, or have the past few weeks felt like the calm before the storm? After all of the TLOP hubbub died down (this is the first week in a long time that we haven't had a Kanye solo joint in our top ten list), we've had quite a lack of releases from rap's upper echelon. Teasers, singles, and release date announcements seem to keep flooding in, but this Friday, when A$AP Ferg releases Always Strive And Prosper, things will really get cooking.
