Yelawolf Goes On Rant Defending Confederate Flag
Yelawolf Goes On Rant Defending Confederate Flag Aug 25, 2015 at 09:45am
Since the tragic, racially-motivated shooting at a church in Charleston this June, the U.S. has been embroiled in a debate about the Confederate flag, which has since been removed from many state government buildings. One of the main arguments presented by the symbol's supporters is that it represents more than slavery and deep-seated racism, and that's basically the tip Alabama native Yelawolf was on when he bashed an anti-Confederate shirt on his Facebook page last night.

Well unfortunately Yelawolf’s on-going battle with addiction continues to be a real struggle. On Friday afternoon, the Alabama rapper made an appearance of ESPN’s day-time talk show “Highly Questionable,” and opened about his problems with alcohol and sobriety. When asked how Eminem wanted to him to slow down his drinking, Yelawolf responded:

Riot Fest has generally been a festival rooted in punk, and while you'll still see many of the post-Warped Tour and OG hardcore bands who don't get calls from Coachella on the lineup, it's also been beefed up with some other genres, namely rap.

While Yelawolf managed a big debut this week, topping his previous album peak of 27 by hitting number 3 on the Billboard 200, rap lost a fair bit of ground. While Wale started off strong with a number one debut, he's fallen 10 or more spots every subsequent week, coming in this cycle at 31. Young Thug is also having a pretty rough time, failing to make the top 20 last week, and now falling to 44. Many of the other big albums stayed put for the most part, with Drake being the biggest gainer on account of the physical release of his "Mixtape".

The record is a celestial, immersive journey that does its darndest in attempt to assemble a collage of sounds, genres, and stories in effort to produce something fresh.

After Yelawolf’s first major-label album Radioactive proved to be, well, just that; and failed to meet the standards set by his 2010 mixtape Trunk Muzik, it felt as though - with his second effort Love Story - an explanation or apology was due. He seemingly traded in his trademark mud-coated country roots for pop-pandering.

Yelawolf's new album, Love Story, is in stores and online today. The rapper has hinted at what to expect from his sophomore album with the "Son's of Anarchy"-featured track "Til It's Gone" as well as "Whiskey In A Bottle" and most recently, "Best Friend." All these songs have a country and southern edge not often heard in hip-hop, and in comparison to Yela's first album, Radioactive, it's definitely a change of pace-- in a good way, though.

Today, he finally drops a follow-up, the more rootsy, rock-influenced Love Story. Led off by the singles "Box Chevy V," "Till It's Gone," "Whiskey Bottle" and "American You," the full, 18-track project is now streamable on Spotify.

Samples Of The Week: September 4

When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".
