Wale flips one of the most recognizable samples in rap for his new track.

Wale has be prolific lately, releasing solo tracks, hopping on various features and even getting a posse cut in with his MMG labelmates. “Reminisce” is the latest result of Wale’s work ethic.

As the title suggests, the DJ Camper-produced beat uses the same horn sample as Pete Rock & CL Smooth’s seminal “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.),” slowing it down and setting it above warm synth work and minimal drums. Wale spits a couple verses and is joined by fellow DC native Phil Ade. We haven’t heard from Phil Ade in a minute, and he surprisingly doesn’t even spit a verse on “Reminisce,” instead contributing crooning outro vocals that sound Cudi-esque. An unexpected use of a great lyricist, but it’s still possibly the highlight of the song.

Quotable Lyrics

Play Godzilla til you climb the wrong building
play me for a pussy, I'll have you pushing daffodil up
rap skills nothing, I won't hold you, they bluffing
them losers in a cell, just know that bell coming
these bitches in my cell, they know they smell the money
and I'm swimming in pussy, these niggas getting ocean 11'd
