The veteran actor opened up to radio host Clay Cane on his SiriusXM podcast. The greatest subject raised during his visit was that of systemic racism. The incident he relayed to Clay Cane occurred some time this year. His dogs started barking one fateful evening so he rushed to look outside. It was clear to Rhames that a disquieting feeling had run its course. Rhames returned to his house and within minutes received a knock at the front door. As Ving recalls, "I open the door and there is a red dot pointed at my face from a 9-mm, and they say, ‘Put up your hands.’ Literally."
Ving Rhames was forced outside his residence by the officers on the scene, who were reportedly investigating a 911 call for a home invasion in the area. Upon closer inspection, one of the cops suddenly recognizes him, but not for his role in Mission Impossible or Pulp Fiction, but as a fellow parent of a player on the local high school basketball team.
According to police, the officers were responding to composite description of a “large black man.” The incident has affected Ving Rhames on profound level; he no longer feels safe in his own backyard. “What if it was my son and he had a video game remote or something, and you thought it was a gun,” Rhames said to Clay Cane. “Just like, I don’t know, Trayvon had a bag of Skittles.”
