Vince Staples Speaks On Gang Culture Glorified In Rap Music

It's been a minute since our dude Damon Campbell hosted an artist, but he's back today with a 19-minute interview with Vince Staples. The interview is pretty insightful, as Vince Staples discusses West Coast lifestyle, both present day and past. The rapper talks about gang culture portrayed in rap music, and glorifying street life versus simply wanting to have a good time. He also talks about going to Catholic school when he was young, and his current view when it comes to religion ("I seen somebody die before, like right there, and I personally think you don't go no where.

    Review: Earl Sweatshirt's "I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside"

Earl Sweatshirt’s I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Get Outside is a short and moody album. It also happens to be a very focused, quality listen, and possibly the best output we’ve received from the California native. Through bummed-out stoned raps and shoegazing beats, Earl proves to be one of the most talented, albeit depressed, rappers in the game.

Each year around the beginning of March, artists begin sending in pitches to XXL, hoping to wind up on the magazine’s highly-coveted Freshmen list. Thus far, we’ve seen Lil Herb, Bishop Nehru, Fat Trel, and a few others try to convince us they have what it takes to grace the cover along with eleven of their peers, each turning in a short video clip to the publication.

Nothing too new is going on in the game this past week. In other words, hip-hop is just going right now. And that's not bad: Vince Staples is alive and still hating on Chris Paul, Jay Z still knows how to tweet, Meek Mill is still free and he's #woke. Common and John Legend won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song ("Glory" from Selma), but other than that, things have been a 40 degree day. The tweets are still fire though.

Now that 2015 is underway, we have plenty of good music to look forward too, when it comes to both mixtapes (just peep our Upcoming section) and albums. Even in this one-listen-then-on-to-the-next generation, it's still appropriate to bump music that dropped last year, right? Especially because some projects didn't get as much as love as the quality of said projects deserve.

How did this week go? Not great. By another miracle of the justice system, Darren Wilson got away with murdering Michael Brown; a grand jury decided to not indict him. To put this in perspective, you need to be beyond reasonable doubt to prove a defendant is guilty. An indictment only requires suspicion. That jury didn't find suspicion with Brown suffering multiple shots. So you can see how the circumstance could cause some outrage within the hip-hop community. See them in 140 Bars Or Less.

Vince Staples Explains How 50 Cent And GTA: San Andreas Inspired Him And His Music
    Mar 21, 2014 at 04:56pm
Vince Staples thinks things like When the hit 2004 game, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (which served as the basis for the latest GTA installment) came out, people claimed that it helped the video game industry grow, but no one expected it to help a future, budding musician grow as an artist. Vince Staples was just a kid when that game came out and when 50 was coming up with great music, but he explained that the maniacal, sandbox video game and the seminal recording artist, 50 Cent, actually served as an inspiration for him to develop as a serious recording Hip-Hop artist.
