Kevin Gates Feat. Vic Mensa, August Alsina, Isaiah Rashad & Chance The Rapper
XXL has finished the roll out of individual cyphers for each rapper on this year's XXL Freshmen list, and with that we get the first group cypher. The first cypher has Kevin Gates, Vic Mensa, August Alsina, Isaiah Rashad and Chance The Rapper. Gates kicks things off with a dope verse, and August Alsina provides a nice r'n'b break not once, but twice, making it act more like a hook on a record rather than your typical cypher. We could definitely use the MP3 for this. Who had the best bars in the group? Stay tuned for more group cyphers from the remaining freshmen.

Vic Mensa
Vic Mensa debuted a pair of new tracks during his performance at Echoplex in L.A. Thursday night. The first was "No Chill," which incorporates Allen Iverson's "practice" speech into its hook. Skrillex apparently handled the production and goddamn if the man's 808 game isn't on point. The song's enormous sound is immediately apparent even through this fan's grainy smartphone footage. "No Chill" song has all the trappings of a single, and based on this video it would be a big surprise if it doesn't end up on Traffic.

While out in NYC this week, Vic Mensa decided to take time out of his busy schedule to make his way by the Hot 97 studios and chop it up with the gang from Ebro in The Morning. During their 13 minute chat, the Chicago rapper talks about the upcoming “Chiraq” film, his thoughts on the Sandra Bland incident, wrestling, and the scandal surrounding ghostwriting and Drake, which he says is “petty”.   “I think Drake is enormously talented and not just a rapper…he’s a franchise.” - Vic

Noisey has let go the fifth episode in their on-going Chiraq documentary, where they head to Chicago and examine the drill movement and rappers who are part of it. For this episode though, they take a break from drill for a minute and meet up with the SAVEMONEY crew, specifically Vic Mensa, as he attempts to get money to bail a fellow crew member, Joey Purp out of jail. During the episode Vic speaks on his love for Rage Against The Machine and the idea of "Chiraq", as well we meet various other members of the SAVEMONEY crew.

Charles Hamilton & Vic Mensa Have An Impromptu Cypher
Charles Hamilton & Vic Mensa
Charles Hamilton and Vic Mensa are about as different from one another as underground-minded rappers can be. After starting in a very indie mindset, Mensa has pretty much shed that affiliation altogether, especially after signing to Roc Nation, and Hamilton (despite a new record deal himself) became famous for how averse he was to mainstream contact. Today though, we get to see them brush shoulders in an impromptu cypher.

Vic Mensa stopped by Revolt TV recently to perform Skrillex-produced uberbanger "No Chill" off his forthcoming major label debut album Traffic. Mensa debuted the track at a show in L.A. last week, and this time around got a live band to assist him. Still waiting on that studio version -- if you thought he turned it up to 11 with "U Mad," wait until the "No Chill" CDQ drops.

The clip finds Asher taking to the streets, offering passers by a "message" from his mysterious box. Many are hesitant at first, but eventually people start to give into their curiosity, and seem to be genuinely moved by what they see. You'll have to watch until the end to find out what the message is.

The last time we heard "Wolves" live was when Kanye West, with Vic Mensa and Australian singer Sia at his side, officially debuted the song in an epic performance during SNL's 40th anniversary show. "Wolves" has since propelled 21-year-old Vic Mensa into the mainstream eye, and last night, during a last-minute surprise show in his hometown of Chicago, he showed he can perform the So Help Me God track just fine on his own.

Vic Mensa has been experimenting with more electronic-leaning sounds as of late, but he can still spit with the best of them when it comes down to it. Sporting some new (Future-inspired?) blond locks, the Chi-town rapper threw down a 10+ minute freestyle for BBC-- much of which seemed to be authentically off the dome.

After sharing the trailer yesterday, The FADER shares new Vic Mensa mini-doc Down to Start a Riot in its entirety. The doc follows Mensa as he walks through the Hyde Park section of Chicago, chills with the Save Money crew, and spits an a capella verse on a deserted subway platform. It also features interviews from such Mensa associates as Joey Purp and Towkio. "He really did what he always knew he was going to do," said his childhood friend Steven Ponce. "Like, damn, this guy is really about to change his life."
