Mick Jenkins- Free Nation Rebel Soldier Pt. 2
Mick Jenkins impresses us more and more with each leak he delivers off the forthcoming The Water(s), his sophomore project due out this year. This past week he delivered a new cut, “Free Nation Rebel Soldier Pt. 2”, a soulful and scratchy cut filled with piano keys, which details Mick’s come-up and the anticipation for The Water(s) (he promises in the lyrics that it is coming!).
Blu- The West
Blu blessed fans this past with some good news and a new record. The rapper is paying homage to his home of Los Angeles with a new album titled Good To Be Home, which is being described as a love letter to L.A. The first leak is definitely indicative of this, simply titled The West, Blue raps over a choppy beat with an equally staccato flow, detailing that L.A. lifestyle.
While we anxiously await Kevin Gates online album By Any Means, the rapper appeared on a random mixtape cut this past week which was for download “Not Really.” This, along with the By Any Means leaks we’ve received, we have enough to hold us over until the album drops on March 18th. On this particular Drumma Boy beat, Gates offers up some advice: listen to Starlito (he calls other rappers “fuckin liars”). Starlito is actually vying for an XXL Freshmen spot this year, so that very well could be a good idea.
JMSN- Reaction (Prod. By IAMNOBODI)
JMSN has been pretty silent since he dropped his album †Pllajë†, however he finally popped up on a new song this week thanks to recruitment from German-based producer IAMNOBODI. The producer crafted the perfect beat for JMSN to hop on, with melodic production that has a touch of the electronic. We’d be interested to hear more from this producer and singer.
I’m not completely up on Le$ repertoire, but this past week he delivered a nice little Expansion Pack EP for his fans which contained a stand-out Curren$y collaboration. The very smooth record contains flute elements and of course, it’s perfect for smoking too. While it is Le$’s record, the Hot Spitta’s verse stole the show with lines like, "This must be your first day around the greats / You lookin' all outta place / Don't say nothing stupid homeboy, save face / We eatin' over here, say grace / Before we partake in sauteed vegetables and steaks."
HNHH's "Underrated Audio" puts you on not-too-mainstream music you might have missed from the past week.
Underrated Audio aims to provide you with some dope looks from the last seven days, that flew under most peoples' radars. While they may have received front-page placement on HNHH, they didn't get as many views as they deserve, so we shine a little more light on them right here.
This week the web was busy with SXSW content pouring in, as many rappers both big (i.e. Jay Z and Kanye West took the stage at Samsung's showcase) and small (i.e. Boldy James was at the Mass Appeal/Grooveshark showcase) performed at different showcases across Austin, Texas.
