Top 10: A$AP Rocky Tracks

With yesterday's news from A$AP Yams that the Mob's debut album was officially scrapped, the only positive news was the promise of new music. Yams tweeted that while the compilation album was cancelled, we'd get a mixtape in October from A$AP Nast as well as a new album later this year from Rocky. So we can't be that mad, right? If you were following along with the announcements on Twitter, Yams posted a link that led to a countdown clock, which indicated something big going down in a few days. 

Because the link leads us to believe the release is Rocky-related, it could possibly be a single from his forthcoming album. We won't have to wait too much longer to find out thankfully. In the meantime, we were thinking that it's been a while since we heard a ton of new music from Rocky, and that's never good. So for this week's installment of Top 10, we'll be running through our all time favorite tracks from That Pretty Muhfucka. As usual, we'll give you the ten best, plus a bunch that just missed the cut. We won't go by sales or radio spins, because a lot of his best music was released for free before his 2012 album came out, though songs from that LP will also be considered. Also, if you thought yesterday's news meant you wouldn't be getting any new music from fan-favorite A$AP Twelvyy, rest assured that A$AP Mob's manager Chace Infinite says a new Twelvvy solo album is forthcoming too.

This otherwise unreleased cut made its way to the public via Radio Los Santos, the preferred radio station of hip-hop fans everywhere within the world of Grand Theft Auto 5. It's siren-sounding beat was perfect for running from the 5-0 on virtual highways with 5 stars and a flat tire. It features some real talk from West Coast A$AP affiliate A$ton Matthews in the middle and two healthy verses from the PMF. Although we wish the song was featured on an official A$AP project, it's a nice surprise to hear it whenever you play the game.

9. Ghetto Symphony

Another standout from his debut album, Rocky enlisted the help of fellow Mob member Fergenstein for this one, as well as MMG's Gunplay. The hard-hitting snares paired with the violin make this one of the classiest street anthems in recent memory, with Ferg adapting his flow to imitate OutKast's Big Boi after Rocky said he'd spit like Andre. Fun fact about this one, the same beat was used on a Shyne song called "Meyer Lanksey" that featured Pusha T and came out around the same time in late 2012.

8. Jodye

One of Rocky's self-proclaimed favorite tracks, this Long.Live.A$AP standout was a not-so-subtle jab at former friend and collaborator SpaceGhost Purrp. Right from the jump, he launches a few shots at the Raider Klan leader and addresses his sneak disses and painted nails. While there were certianly songs on the album that got more attention, songs like "Jodye" felt like they meant a tremendous amount to Rocky himself, and you could hear it in his writing. Maybe even more impressively, Rocky co-produced the track, which has a dark and haunting beat, along with Joey Fatts.

7. Pretty Flacko

One of SpaceGhost Purrp's biggest contributions before beefing with the Mob was this timeless beat. If you've ever see A$AP Rocky perform live, you've probably been punched in the face or lost a wallet to this song, as it tends to get a wee-bit turned up when "Pretty Flacko" comes on. This song is also probably the most hood track to ever reference Asher Roth, see if you can find it.

6. Purple Swag

This ode to Houston and Rocky's favorite purple drink has a little bit of a weird backstory. While the original version is found on a fan-made EP called Deep Purple, the remix featuring then-collaborator SpaceGhost Purrp and A$AP Nast was the version placed on Rocky's official mixtape. Because Purrp fell out of favor with Rocky and the rest of A$AP Mob, the original version of the song was used in the "Purple Swag" video, which you can watch below.

5. Long Live A$AP

While "Goldie" served as the lead single, this cut proved to be the mood-setting opener, painting the dark and ominous vibe that prevailed throughout Rocky's entire debut album. It speaks on where Rakim thought he might be if rapping hadn't worked out as well as how he got such nice Christmas gifts, even when times were tough at home.

4. Brand New Guy

Our second Schoolboy Q collaboration of the list, this song is often overlooked, but a modern classic nonetheless. This Lyle-produced cut from Rocky's debut mixtape is a fan-favorite at shows and still maintains its catchiness today. Just try getting it out of your head after a listen.

3. Wassup

One of the many highlights of Rocky's debut solo mixtape, "Wassup" is the kind of lofty cloud-rap that helped put Clams Casino in the upper echelon of producers in hip-hop at the time. This song also represented what most people pointed to as Rocky' biggest musical influence, a Houston brand of hip-hop fused with that Harlem World street shit. The self-directed video paid homage to some of Flacko's favorite movies: "Scarface", "Belly" and "The Warriors" to name a few.

2. Goldie

The Hit-Boy-produced banger served as the lead single for Rocky's debut album in 2012, and truly set the tone. The track showed that Yung Rakim wasn't going to compromise his style, or the kind of music that his fans flocked to in the first place, for commercial success. Though the song reflected his signature taste, it also did well at radio and racked up nearly 13 million views on YouTube.

1. Peso

While it may seem a little played out now, this was the world's introduction to A$AP Rocky, and it was a memorable one at that. The song that put Flacko on the map, this Ty Beats-produced classic opened up the floodgates for all that is A$AP Worldwide. The visual to the video served as an introduction to the fashion-forward posse as well as a peek into everyday life in Harlem, home base for the A$AP Mob. The song is housed on Rocky's debut LiveLoveA$AP mixtape, which did pretty well with our readers (98% said it was VERY HOTTTTT) and editors alike when it dropped in almost 3 years ago in 2011.
