Most artists hit their audiences in waves. They begin as a “diet” version of themselves and slowly break out of their shell as more money and acceptance receives them. Marcus Black does not observe this rule… or any others. If ever a rap artist personified the counter-culture movement, he was Marcus Black. Never having set foot in a professional facility, he sets himself apart from the basement dwelling hobbyists with a chrome-like polish and technical skill. But, more than lyrics and flow, his character flaws shine through each and every verse. The frustrations of young fatherhood (which he overcomes daily for his 3 daughters and son), severe anxiety, ADD, and an additional laundry list of self-diagnoses befitting a hypochondriac leave their unique marks on the 23 year old’s records. Don’t be fooled – Marcus Black feels no shame. Whether he’s sick, deranged, or unreasonable, he owns it. The greatest crime his critics would commit is any attempt to paint his personality a gimmick. While his mother was serving time for selling crack, his father was making ends meet as a music producer.
