The Weeknd caps off what was an immensely exciting 2011 with a third and final mixtape, Echoes of Silence, released on December 21, 2011. The project follows up House of Balloons and Thursday respectively, each an instalment in a trilogy that has consistently broken new ground for r'n'b, and is certainly bleeding over into the hip-hop scene as well. The enigmatic r'n'b singer is well on his way to becoming an icon, with Echoes of Silence further cementing this fact.

The Canadian singer delivers 9 new songs on Echoes of Silence, enlisting a familiar producer from his first two mixtapes, in Illangelo. Illangleo produced this new mix tape in its entirety, with sparse assistance from DropxLife and Clams Casino. The project was reportedly created while Abel Tesfaye spent time in Montreal, and to that end, there is a song dedicated to the Quebec city on the tracklist. Meanwhile album opener, "D.D", is a take on Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana," created with the millennial generation in mind.

Echoes of Silence is an even muddier, and darker, foray into the topics that The Weeknd has been exploring since House of Balloons. If you're prepared to fall down the rabbit hole, hit play and let us know what you think.
