The third collaborative album from ATL’s most insightful shit talker, Killer Mike, and Brooklyn’s otherwordly underground producer/rapper, El-P, is their strongest yet—and one of the year’s best releases.
The Maryland native makes good on the hype, turning in an impressive major label debut. Logic's "Under Pressure" waxes nostalgia throughout the album, while giving a contemporary tale from multiple perspectives.
On "STN MTN," Glover enlists DJ Drama to create an ode to a long-gone version of Atlanta, using some of the forgotten nuances and motifs. "Kauai EP" represents a present, based on discovery and 'blunt' reflection. Using visions of a pleasant past and colorful present, Donald Glover and Childish Gambino have finally fused together.
The highly anticipated second full-length SBTRKT album offers a plethora of special features and futuristic beats. It lacks the danceability of the first record, but really solidifies the producer's niche in the burgeoning alternative/electronic genre.
"Souled Out" features songstress Jhene Aiko bravely stretching out on her own, for which she should be commended. However, the album's lack of diversity and dynamism, in overall production, nullifies Aiko's magnetism to a considerable extent.
