Even though she didn't release a project in 2016, Kehlani still managed to stay in the headlines for the most part of the year. From her scary suicide attempt to reaching Billboard’s Hot 100 with singles “Gangsta” & “CRZY,” the Bay Area singer has been on one emotional roller coaster these past 12 months, and now she’s ready to open up about it. At the stroke of midnight, Kehlani’s long awaited debut album, SweetSexySavage, was finally released on iTunes after months of anticipation, and we couldn’t be happier for her.
Following up 2015’s Grammy-nominated You Should Be Here tape, #SSS is a 13-track effort that’s title is reminiscent of TLC's 1994 classic CrazySexyCool, but with a modern twist. Collaborating primarily with songwriting/production duo Pop & Oak, who are attached to about half the tracks on the album, Kehlani says the album & its title is symbolic for women, “As women we are told that we cannot be multi layered.. we are put in boxes.. we can’t be all the above.. reclaim yourself…The name is supposed to challenge you. The name is supposed to make you question… only to let u find your own answer.”
To coincide with the album, Kehlani is also getting ready to hit the road next month with Ella Mai & Jaykoy for her similarly-titled tour, kicking off Feb. 21 in Montreal. (Peep dates here if you wish to attend)
