UPDATE: Information about the shooter released.
The suspect has been taken into custody, but not before killing five people in baggage claim 2 of the Fort Lauderdale airport. Eight more are injured. The gunman was reportedly shooting without a target, spraying bullets into a panicked crowd.
The shooter has been identified as 26 year old Esteban Santiago, born in New Jersey. He had a military ID on him at the time of the attack. Witnesses claim he was using a handgun and was wearing a Star Wars t-shirt.
In an ongoing situation, nine people have been shot and one has died according to a report from CNBC and NBC News. The shooting took place in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2. There are conflicting reports as to whether the gunman is in custody or is dead.
The news first circulated from former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer’s tweets. He happened to be at the airport when the shooting began, writing “shots have been fired. Everyone is running.” It seems the situation has settle a bit, as the Fort Lauderdale airport is directing media to a staging area for a press briefing.
We will update this story as is develops.
I'm at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Shots have been fired. Everyone is running.— Ari Fleischer (@AriFleischer) January 6, 2017
All seems calm now but the police aren't letting anyone out of the airport - at least not the area where I am.— Ari Fleischer (@AriFleischer) January 6, 2017
