Listen to Shonte Renee's reenvisioning of INOJ's "Love You Down."

Shonte Renee's "Love You Down" is a modern interpretation of the 90s R&B classic from INOJ (itself a cover of Ready For The World's 1986 release). The slow-building record begins with a simple bassline, before introducing some tastefully skittering high hats and a catchy synth line that provides a counter-melody to Renee's confident lead. Her studied approach to songwriting can be seen in the cover project Color Me Bad (Red), which not only finds her taking on some classic source material, but features Shonte recreating Janet Jackson's iconic Rolling Stone cover for the artwork, a piece of music history she's taken inspiration from, writing, “I love that the picture is risqué and I feel like it highlights who I am to the core, which is exactly what I want to show to the world. I wanted to grab people’s attention and give them me.”

Quotable Lyrics:
Remember when you drove me home from work?
I loved the way when you kissed me bye
All of your friends think I'm just too young for you
You tell them that I can do what girls their age can do
