Last week, Childish Gambino brought us his ambitious STN MTN/KAUAI project, the first half of which involved him making his own idealized version of a Gangsta Grillz tape. Thusly, STN MTN's intro track, "Dream/Southern Hospitality/Partna Dem," samples a bevy of classic ATL tracks, as well as some others from different genres. Sampled within are Ludacris' "Southern Hospitality," Oukast's "SpottieOttieDopaliscious," Rich Kidz's "My Partna Dem," the Coast 2 Coast remix of Jermaine Dupri's "Welcome 2 Atlanta" and Bjork's "Venus As A Boy," all of which are embedded below.
Samples of The Week: October 9
A$AP Rocky returned after a long drought with the track "Multiply," which became the latest in a long line of Three 6 Mafia-influenced Rocky tracks. Opening with a Juicy J monologue, the track also borrows from the rapper's former group, namely some vocals from "Still Fly," as well as some instrumental elements from Giancarlo Chiaramello's "Love Theme Of Annie."
Dreamville signee Cozz dropped his debut project, Cozz & Effect, last week, and label boss J. Cole joined him on the track "Konck The Hustle." Befitting Cole's love of boom-bap, the track samples a classic drum break, namely the one from Melvin Bliss' "Synthetic Substitution," which has previously fueled everything from "Bring Da Ruckus" to "O.P.P."
A$AP Ferg Reveals He Has A Mixtape With DJ Drama In The Works
A$AP Ferg reveals that a Gangsta Grillz mixtape is expected to drop prior to his second solo album.
A breakdown of the week's hottest tracks by their samples.
When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".
