This week, Flying Lotus freed a track of his that will appear on a deluxe reissue of the "Grand Theft Auto V" soundtrack. Featuring the considerable talents of Krayzie Bone, "Medication Meditation" also makes use of a recognizable sample. Alain Goraguer's "Ten Et Tiwa Dorment," taken from the 1973 film "La Planete Sauvage" (which may have one of the most sampled soundtracks of all time), provides the backbone, as it did on Mac Miller's "Insomniak" and The Underachievers' "Chrysalis."
Samples Of The Week: November 20
Thelonius Martin may have called upon Curren$y and Domo Genesis for "Atlantis," the first single from his new album, but the most palpable guest is the '70s prog-rock band Eloy. Fittingly, Martin samples their 1977 epic of a track "Atlantis' Agony at June 5th - 8498, 13 p.m. Gregorian Earthtime," which tells of the collapse of the mythic civilization.
Alright, so what's the deal with Pusha T and Kanye West's "Lunch Money"? Is Pusha's rapping not good enough for you, or is it really the slightly-abrasive beat that's turning all of you naysayers off from this one? Well, take a deep breath and try listening again. As Mr. West is prone to do, the song is built around a very obscure sample that nobody else would have the gall to pull off. Jean-Jacques Perrey's "E.V.A." provides the track's video game-esque sound burbles, as well as its choppy guitar line. Kanye's always-controversial success may be best measured by the amount of people he pisses off with new material, and if that's the case, "Money Counter" is an instant classic.
J. Cole Shows Up At A Fan's House In Dallas To Play Her "2014 Forest Hills Drive"
J. Cole shows up at a fan's house in Dallas, Texas and plays her his new album "2014 Forest Hills Drive" for a private listening session.
A breakdown of the week's hottest tracks by their samples.
When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".
This week, see who Flying Lotus, Thelonius Martin and Pusha T sampled on their recent tracks, all of which can be found on HNHH.
