As Freddie Gibbs is one of the coldest gangsta rappers around, you wouldn't necessarily expect him to sample Drake. "White Range," a track from his new Pronto EP, contains a pitched-down vocal sample that you might assume is UGK or 8Ball & MJG, but it's actually Drizzy, taken from his and Rick Ross' "Free Spirit." The instrumental's also a slowed-down flip of the track's sample of Sade's "I will Be Your Friend," so props to Gibbs for completely changing the character of this one.
Samples Of The Week: March 12
Flatbush Zombies are back with another series of "Day Of The Dead" releases, and the first one was a burner. The A$AP Twelvyy-assisted "Half - Time" samples an Amy Winehouse song of the same name, with the always-stellar Erick Arc Elliott giving her a very fitting tribute by way of a smoked-out track.
The Zombies weren't the only ones coming back to give us the hotly-anticipated next installment of a series, with Curren$y sharing the first few tracks from his upcoming Pilot Talk III tape. "Audio Dope 5" was one of these, and in it, Ski Beatz chose to sample an obscure Japanese record that we almost couldn't find online. Thankfully, Yasuko Kawashima's 1976 heater "Omoideno Screen" was included on a recent samples and breaks compilation on Datpiff, so you can listen to it as the first track on the comp below.
