Last week saw 50 Cent unveil his remix of Fabolous' "Cuffin' Season," a track from his Soul Tape 2 project. The track begins with a sample of Bobby Vinton's "Sealed With A Kiss," its sweetly-sung words about saying goodbye to a lover setting up Loso and Fiddy's harsher-but-similar words. In terms of breakup tracks, "Cuffin' Season" does a good job of showing us the lineage from warm '70s soft rock to cold-as-fuck hip-hop.
Samples Of The Week: June 12
Tory Lanez hit us with the premier of his track "The Godfather," which fittingly samples the theme from Francis Ford Coppola's film trilogy of the same name. Using the cinematic strings to great effect, Lanez shows that he's a force to be reckoned with, just like Marlon Brando's title character.
A breakdown of the week's hottest tracks by their samples.
When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".
This week, see who Fabolous, Tory Lanez and Statik Selektah chose to sample in their recent releases, all of which you can find on HNHH. Check back every Thursday for more record breaks from your favorite artists.
