Charts Don't Lie: March 9
With the appearance of a brand new #1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, each and every hip hop release highlighted below slipped over the past week, with the exception of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who debuted at #4. That's a pretty wild trend to see: Rihanna went from #2 to #3, The Weeknd went from #6 to #12, Kevin Gates went from #9 to #13, so on and so forth.

There's not much happening on the new Billboard chart, hip-hop-wise, that is -- as 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne's ColleGrove as well as Kendrick Lamar's surprise album, which both dropped on Friday (Mar. 4), will appear on next week's chart. The only notable hip-hop entry onto this week's Billboard 100 is Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' sophomore album, This Unruly Mess I've Made, which has made its debut at No. 4.

In an interview with The New York Times, Macklemore revealed he had reached out to Adele to collaborate on the song "Growing Up," but the British singer/songwriter "graciously passed" on the opportunity.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' Grammy wins (or moreso Kendrick Lamar's losses) may have incited quite a backlash from the hip hop community, but overall it looks as if the duo has profited from them. "Same Love", the song in which they performed alongside the wedding of 33 couples of all different ethnicities and sexualities, has experienced a 350% increase in sales the week following the Grammys. The track moved 51,000 units--a huge jump from the 11,000 the previous week--which adds to the already 2.4 million digital sales the song has acquired since its release.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are nominated for multiple Grammys tonight, some of which are for their same-sex marriage-promoting track, "Same Love". The duo will also be performing the cut, and they have a fairly ambitious stage setup planned. 34 couples of all different ethnicities and sexualities will be married onstage while the duo perform their hit. Lewis explains that the weddings “will be in our minds the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing.”

It seems that the rapper/producer team is finally through pushing their breakthrough project, as Mack announced via Instagram that he and Lewis are back in the studio together, captioning a photo of his creative partner with "Very happy to be back in the lab with this guy.... @ryanlewis".
