Charts Don't Lie: March 9 Mar 9, 2016 at 04:08pm
With the appearance of a brand new #1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, each and every hip hop release highlighted below slipped over the past week, with the exception of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who debuted at #4. That's a pretty wild trend to see: Rihanna went from #2 to #3, The Weeknd went from #6 to #12, Kevin Gates went from #9 to #13, so on and so forth.

There's not much happening on the new Billboard chart, hip-hop-wise, that is -- as 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne's ColleGrove as well as Kendrick Lamar's surprise album, which both dropped on Friday (Mar. 4), will appear on next week's chart. The only notable hip-hop entry onto this week's Billboard 100 is Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' sophomore album, This Unruly Mess I've Made, which has made its debut at No. 4.

(Full disclosure: I am also a white guy from Seattle.)

For many rap fans, that fact that Macklemore isn't up for any Grammys this February is a good thing (although, warning: Iggy Azalea might wipe the smirks off your faces), but by next year's ceremony, it's looking like there might be another project from him and Ryan Lewis for the judges to laud with praise and trophies. Yesterday morning, Macklemore gave a revealing response to a fan pining for a new album.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' Grammy wins (or moreso Kendrick Lamar's losses) may have incited quite a backlash from the hip hop community, but overall it looks as if the duo has profited from them. The track moved 51,000 units--a huge jump from the 11,000 the previous week--which adds to the already 2.4 million digital sales the song has acquired since its release.

Yesterday it was revealed that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis almost didn't make it into the rap categories at the Grammys because they've been too successful aka mainstream aka pop this past year. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Almost Banned From Rap Category At The Grammys Jan 23, 2014 at 05:34pm
The Grammys finally go down this weekend, on Sunday January 27th, so there's plenty of Grammy discussion going down these past few days both rap-related and not.  In the rap sphere, the competition is stiff, mainly divided between Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Jay Z. Of course, Kanye West and J. Cole, among other rappers, also received nods this year.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis had a huge 2013, despite releasing no new music. The duo's debut project, The Heist was released in 2012, but it made the majority of its impact throughout the following year, earning the two collaborators some Grammy nominations in the process. It seems that the rapper/producer team is finally through pushing their breakthrough project, as Mack announced via Instagram that he and Lewis are back in the studio together, captioning a photo of his creative partner with "Very happy to be back in the lab with this guy.... @ryanlewis".
