Behind The Beat: C4
Behind The Beat: C4 Apr 22, 2016 at 09:22am
Most of Atlanta's most successful musicians were born in the city and haven't left since. The transplants that have been able to make it are mostly from the South, as Atlanta is really the only place in the region that provides any opportunity for a career in music. That's where C4 headed after he had seen DJ Spinz, also from the town of Augusta, make a name for himself in the Georgia capital.

Staff Picks Playlist (February 26) Feb 26, 2016 at 03:54pm
The week is almost over, and with that, comes our Staff Picks playlist. This past week wasn't so heavy on the mixtapes/albums (although French Montana did make a splash with Wave Gods), as it was on the songs/news. Perhaps more so on the news, but the end of the week still proved fruitful with a Cash Money reunion of sorts, a big ASAP Mob remix, a Tory Lanez flip, a new single from Baauer and more. As we approach the month of March, we're preparing ourselves not only for a shift in weather but a shift in music.

Rome Fortune, usually as prolific as anyone in his home city of Atlanta, slowed down in preparation for the release of his debut album, Jerome Raheem Fortune, which arrived today on Fool's Gold Records, the Brooklyn-based independent label that has long mitigated the divide between genres, especially hip-hop and electronic.

He's collaborated on multiple tracks with both fellow ATLien OG Maco and British electronica mastermind Four Tet. With a few mixtapes and a handful of EPs, Rome Fortune is one of the freshest talents in the game.

GrandeMarshall is a young Philly rapper who signed to Fool's Gold in 2012 after his 800 mixtape caught the ears of label bosses A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs. He's had a couple of quality tracks this year, though he hasn't released a full project since 2013's Mugga Man mixtape. Marshall has now come through with his first official album on the Brooklyn label -- My Brother's Keeper, which he's made available for streaming.

Shout out the weekend. Friday is upon us. We're kicking off the weekend as we usually do, with a dose of our staff's favorite Soundcloud releases from the past seven days. This week turned out to be pretty big on the mixtape side, with Ty Dolla $ign, Big K.R.I.T., Jadakiss and Jeezy dropping free projects. However this week's Staff Picks playlist deviates from the big names for the most part, shining light on a bunch of up & comers. It's also not the -hardest- playlist ever, there's a lot of softer, r'n'b-leaning records until you get down towards the bottom.

Rappers To Watch In 2015
Rappers To Watch In 2015 Feb 17, 2015 at 10:53am
We know you're probably sick of all the year-end lists from last year, but we're already in the second month of 2015, and we're hypothesizing who will get their big break in the coming months. This time last year, Bobby Shmurda came across a particularly fiery Jahlil Beats production on YouTube. Months later, iLoveMakonnen would see Drake remixing his song on Instagram. Crazy shit happens in hip-hop, and we wanna stay ahead of the curve. Some of the names on this list will be more familiar than others, but all these rappers have the potential to have huge come-ups in 2015.
10 Essential OG Maco Tracks
10 Essential OG Maco Tracks Jan 29, 2015 at 12:55pm
OG Maco is a really interesting, rising star in the rap scene. His music video "U Guessed It" garnered 21 million plays on YouTube since it was uploaded five months ago, and he has been on everyone's mind ever since. While his style can be pinned down as aggressive staccato rapping, OG Maco keeps us guessing. His Breathe EP is surprisingly well-spoken and intelligent, as the young ATLien raps about the recent string of police injustice that saw the lives of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Michael Brown taken without a real cause.

Behind The Beat: Suicideyear
Behind The Beat: Suicideyear Nov 27, 2014 at 05:10pm
James Prudhomme, who produces as Suicideyear, is only 18, though his virtuosity might suggest otherwise. He's a guy who isn’t afraid to let his youth (not inexperience) shine through. He lets his muddled teenage emotions pour into his work. He sounds like he’s 18—innocent, moody, and, ultimately, hopeful—albeit, one of the more talented 18-year-old producers you’ll ever encounter. Hailing from Baton Rouge, Suicideyear grew up on the homegrown sounds of Lil Boosie and Webbie, New Orleans— Cash Money and No Limit, and ATL— Gucci, Future, et al.
