Before characterization of rap artist made it necessary to have a gimmick to sell records; RIK was influenced by the reality of his humble; modest upbringing in Gary, IN. It is evident in his music that he draws from his ambitions and the often rough experiences associated with growing up amongst urban surroundings. Struggling not to become a statistic; RIK became a product of his environment; but refused to be a victim of it. Growing up in Gary, IN during a time when the city held the notorious title "murder capitol of the United States", RIK was accustomed to seeing the gritty; dark; and often depressing side of life. To avoid the pitfalls of gang life; drugs; and the thug lifestyle that so many of his peers were involved with; RIK turned to music first teaching himself how to play guitar at the age of 10 and picking up the keyboard at 13, once he learned to construct melodies RIK found his true calling... hip-hop. RIK wrote poetry inspired by what he saw and experienced but his poetry soon turned to song when he convinced his mother to buy him a Fugees record entitled "the score" in 1996 RIK found it easy for himself to express his feelings and tell stories through rap. RIK went on to be influenced by artist such as Jay-Z; Biggie Smallz; Nas and Outkast these influences are at times heard in his music. Songwriting became RIK's escape soon he began writing verses and songs for local artist in his area and gave recording a shot himself from time to time. After 2 tries at college life first at Purdue university (where RIK realized he was not comfortable with traditional academics) and second, at Columbia College an arts school in Chicago (where RIK felt he could grow in an artistic environment). Now in 2011 RIK resides in Chicago and is releasing his first solo EP "The INTRO"
