By now, there isn't a single person who doesn't know about the Pokemon franchise, whether it be through the long-running game franchise, the anime, or the global phenomenon Pokemon Go. Suffice it to say, the Pocket Monsters have become a cultural staple, and creator Game Freak have been more than willing to keep the content coming. Today marks the announcement of a new Pokemon game, albeit not one of the mainline titles like last year's Sword and Shield.

According to IGN, Pokemon Unite will be coming to both mobile devices and the Nintendo Switch at some point this year, though a concrete release date has yet to be announced. The "strategic team-based battle game" will be a free-to-start game, and will support cooperative play. In fact, the team component appears to be one of the biggest selling points of the launch trailer, which showcases some gameplay alongside a few nostalgic clips.

Developed alongside Tencent's TiMi Studios, teams will be able to battle and capture wild Pokemon, which can in turn net points. Pokemon can also evolve and learn a variety new moves, and while it's highly unlikely that the entire Pokemon roster will be made available at launch, Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Machop, Snorlax, Haunter, Talonflame, Clefairy, and Riolu (as well as their evolutions) have been confirmed as playable.
