Nice To Meet You
When we talked to Skylar Tait, better known as Skywlkr, he was at home in Detroit with friends. They were playing FIFA, eating chicken nuggets and waiting for Uber to drop some girl off at the crib. If you must know, he plays with Everton in FIFA, he applies ketchup to his nuggets individually from the packet instead of dipping, and his Uber booty call cost $38. Not a bad day by normal people standards. Skywlkr however had just returned home from opening up for Eminem with Danny Brown on one of the world's biggest stages in Wembley Stadium. So nuggets and FIFA was probably a welcomed slow day for the busy beatmaker.
A few years ago, he was a kid playing in metal bands that, through a friend's cousin's rap groupmate, met Danny Brown and impressed him with his production work. This led to Danny asking Skywlkr to do a little work on his then-upcoming XXX mixtape, before eventually realizing Skywlkr was making the dopest music for the project and letting him do most of the production work on the release. We'll get into XXX shortly, but first let's cover the basics.
Skywlkr released two bootleg instrumental mixtapes, Strawberry Cough and Blueberry Cough, the latter of which was sold digitally as well as on a super limited edition cassette. Due to the combined success of his 2 early instrumental albums and his higher profile work with Danny Brown, Skywlkr met the demands of a new instrumental project with Impressions in 2012. The album compiled all the best instrumentals he placed with rappers throughout all of 2011. It's available as a free download or you can stream it below.
His unconventional chicken nugget sauce applying methods mirror his tendencies in music production, never wanting to waste any of the good stuff. He doesn't go overboard with samples, instead finding one that's just right and transforming it into its own audio landscape from which he can then add to and grow from. He's excellent with drum patterns and blends his sometimes wildly intricate percussion with the samples perfectly, to create music that pushes the envelopes of today's standards in hip-hop.
