Meek talks politics, police, and Nicki Minaj in a new interview.

Meek Mill has been catching a ton of flack recently for inciting a beef with Drake on Twitter, and it appears that he may be headed to the studio to record a diss track of his own. A new interview with Billboard put the beef in perspective, as Meek opened up about his relationship with Nicki Minaj and his experiences with the police growing up in Philadelphia.

Meek said he is reluctant to imbue his lyrics with a political message like Kendrick Lamar and other peers. "I'm scared to be political," he says. "You get too powerful and more people try to take you out. My son ain't trying to hear that his dad got put away because he was fighting for the country."

One night, when Meek was 18, the police booked him on gun and drug charges. They cuffed him, took him inside his house, and started wailing on him. "[They] beat the shit out of me," he said. "[I had] a concussion, stitches, braids ripped out. My blood was on the ceiling, on the floor."

Meek also discussed his 5-month stint in jail in 2014, the majority of which was spent in solitary confinement. "Imagine being locked in your bathroom 23 hours a day," he said. "That's the closest I ever came to losing my mind. You're talking to yourself, playing games with the birds in the window. It's hell."

Meek was candid in talking about his relationship with Nicki Minaj, who he described as a positive influence in his life. He dismissed criticism from rappers like Joe Budden who accused him of going soft. ”You can’t be hard all the time, man," he said. There’s both sides to everything. What’s wrong with it? Jay Z was a street rapper and he had a girlfriend.”
