Marvel Comics has been giving us excellent hip hop variant covers for a while now, but so far those have only been artistic exercises. While it’s great to see Marvel paying homage to great hip hop albums, we’d love to see that creative connection extend beyond just a cover. Marvel seems to be doing just that with their new series centered on recently created superhero America Chavez.

Marvel has taken Beyonce’s look from the iconic Formation video and turned it into the defining look for America Chavez, a queer Latina superhero who can punch through dimensions. Chavez got her superhero start as part of the Young Avengers series, but this is her first time being the star of the show.

Gabby Rivera is writing the comic, and Joe Quinones drew the art for America Chavez’s inaugural comic. The comic hits shelves in April, so mark your calendars.
