It's the most wonderful time of the year for anyone who's into sports video games.

Madden NFL 18 is set to debut on EA Access later on this week, while the wide release comes on August 22nd. It marks the beginning of the frenzied roll out for all major sports simulations, most of the them coming from EA Sports. Madden has historically been one of the top-selling franchises when it comes to video games across all platforms and, based on the snippets from in-game demos, this year's edition looks to have upped the ante considerably.

First, there are the improved graphics. Most notable on Sony's Playstation platform, the smoothness and realism demonstrated by the in-game action has been mostly attributed to the new Frostbite graphics engine. Examples from gameplay demos on the Xbox One console have yielded similar results. There are also differing game modes based on your level of experience with previous incarnations of the game: Arcade, Simulation and Competitive. While Arcade is probably the best choice for beginners who have few to zero reps in the bank when it comes to playing Madden, more seasoned veterans of the game franchise will want to check out the latter two modes, as they offer a more detailed and in-depth recreation of an NFL game.
