The original version of Lil Peep's "Falling Down" with XXXTentacion, which incorporates a romantic lead-in from iLoveMakonnen has surfaced ahead of schedule. Before the song became a posthumous sendoff for XXX, it was intended for iLoveMakonnen as an ode to their romantic friendship. The airy production takes into effect their eclectic musical leanings, and also the overall sentimentality of the song and their kinship. The two rappers were in the process of recording a joint EP when "Sunlight On Your Skin" came together.
iLoveMakonnen explained the difference between his record and the repurposed version that went to XXXTentacion, in an interview with XXL:
"X had heard the snippet on YouTube and he wanted to be a part of it and he recorded some parts to it. X ended up passing away, and his mom and his family were reaching out to Peep's management and everybody saying the song was something that X was very passionate about before he passed and he would really like to be a part of this and asked if we could make this happen, so I was like, sure."
