We've seen it with Offset and Gucci Mane. Sometimes a stint behind bars inspires a rapper to bring his best bars upon his return to the outside world. That appears to be the case with Kodak Black. After spending over six months in jail, Kodak has hit the ground running since his surprise release at the beginning of the month. In his first week out, he dropped a song, "There He Go," as well as an accompanying video, and he has since collaborated with Yo Gotti ("Weatherman") and Dej Loaf ("All I Want for Christmas"). And that's just the beginning. The 19-year-old Pompano Beach rapper was recently spotted in the studio with the most sought-after producer in the land: Metro Boomin.
It's really a surprise that these two haven't linked sooner. Metro's chemistry with young street rappers is second to none, especially when it comes to guys who bring forth nuanced real-life narratives. One can hear a nice preview of one of their collabs -- potentially entitled "Tunnel Vision" -- in the blow video. The beat has Metro's genius written all over it -- sprightly flutes, a moody guitar melody, and hard, pulsing drumwork. From hearing the hook alone, this could be Kodak's first post-prison hit. Hopefully we'll get to hear the full song soon, and if we're really lucky, then Lil Kodak and Young Metro will have plenty more where this came from.
It seems that DJ Khaled was also present at the same studio session. Remember that Kodak guested on his Major Key collaboration, "Pick These Hoes Apart," also featuring Jeezy and French Montana.
Though temporarily free, Kodak is still awaiting his sexual assault trial in South Carolina -- where he's banned from until he's back in the courtroom. The graphic details of the allegations have been disturbing, to say the least -- and the severity of the whole case seems to be somewhat obscured by the high quality of Kodak's music. Of course, it's always guilty until proven innocent, but many rap fans now find themselves in a predicament.
