In an announcement on Good Morning America this morning, the Calfornia Democratic Senator Kamala Harris announced that she would be running for President in the upcoming 2020 elections. She is not the first to announce and certainly not the last, in the coming days.

She's already got a website up, which details (in not very much detail) her policies which include: tax cuts for the middle class, single-payer healthcare, tuition-free public colleges and a program that would test giving out guaranteed jobs for anyone who's interested. She also won't be accepting campaign contributions from corporate PACs.

Her announcement's timing will not be lost on anybody for two reasons. First, she has come out quite early, looking to get her name out amongst what will likely be a crowded and qualified Democratic primary that's already populated by big names like Elizabeth Warren, Richard Ojeda, Kirsten Gillibrand, maybe Beto O'Rourke and maybe Cory Booker. Second, she chose to make the announcement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a decision she discussed on Good Morning America:

The thing about Dr. King that always inspires me is that he was aspirational. He was aspirational like our country is aspirational. We know that we've not yet reached those ideals. But our strength is that we fight to reach those ideals[...]So today, the day we celebrate Dr. King, is a very special day for all of us as Americans and I'm honored to be able to make my announcement on the day we commemorate him.

Democratic primary debates will begin in June.
