It's strange, but emo has found its way into the rap game. Perhaps tenets of the genre were always dormant, particularly within a certain sect of new school voices. From the late Lil Peep to subject du jour Juice WRLD, the melancholic lyricism and minor key progressions have become increasingly common over trap drums. Such is the case in WRLD's latest, the angst-fuelled "My X Was Poison." Relatable for some, especially those with dubious taste in women. Over a low-key, hypnotic instrumental, the Chicago artist paints a picture of dark times, singing "my ex told me we should try again, I said I'll break your heart like you did me."

While the melding genres may not be everyone's cup of tea, you've gotta respect the experimentation. New voices continue to emerge with their takes on hip-hop. Juice WRLD has already proven himself to be versatile; it's up to you to decide whether the songwriting will withstand the test of time. Day one fans might recognize this song as an unreleased jam from way back. Today, it receives an official release.

Quotable Lyrics

I hope your boyfriends fucks and you miss me
I hope you say my name when he's hitting
I hope you think of me when you're kissing
I hope you call I'll decline I'm busy
