Yesterday it was revealed that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis almost didn't make it into the rap categories at the Grammys because they've been too successful aka mainstream aka pop this past year. However, in a landslide vote decided by the general Grammy committee, the final decision was to nominate them amongst rap competitors.
This could affect their nomination in a bad way, if the committee doesn't deem them 'rap' enough, but it could also be a good thing, since Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are so unquestionably successful. Thus, there is plenty of debate surrounding the rap nominees, mainly though, it's a debate centering around Kendrick Lamar versus Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
Each are going up against each other in four different categories on Sunday, Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance. The hip-hop community is vying for K.Dot to take home Best Rap Album (among others), and Joey Bada$$ counts himself among them. In a recent interview with MTV News the rapper shared his opinion on what will go down, which is the commonly-shared notion that although it should go to Kendrick, Macklemore will win.
"The reality of it is that Macklemore is going to win over Kendrick, he has more record sales, he's more commercial and that's just the reality of it," Joey Bada$$ said. "That's Grammys. That's what you got, but I personally feel like Kendrick deserves that more."
