Reports that Jimmy Butler and Kyrie Irving were exploring their short term options have given a clear sign of validity now that 'Wolves superstar has turned down a lucrative extension from his current club. The Minnesota Timberwolves are believed to have offered Butler a 4-year extension worth just under $110 Million according to league sources who spoke directly with ESPN.
Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor broke the news himself on ESPN 1500 radio in a tell-all interview. Taylor offered a quick play-by-play account of their exchange: "We offered him the extension, and they've met and come back to us and said they're really appreciative of it, they appreciate that we got to them right away and all that, but they declined it."
Butler's camp added gratuities to soften blow, saying management has handled their client in a first class capacity, not fault of their own. This is the 2nd time Butler and his reps have turned down a lucrative extension. Back in 2014 before his play to a giant step forward, Butler rejected a 4-year that would have paid him $11 million annually. The Chicago Bulls were then forced to trade him once it became apparent their star player had outgrown his position on the roster. Inevitably, this is a make or break year for Timberwolves management as many questions lie unanswered, specifically concerns over Karl Anthony Towns and his defensive liabilities.
