Jaron Gilliard, known professionally as J-Cali, is a kinetic hip-hop artist whose musical and personal styles are direct reflections of the ever-evolving musical bastion which is Los Angeles. From the plugs in his ears to the prominent ink on his body, from his lyrical bravado to his guttural vocals, J-Cali represents a young generation of artists raised on the ideals of autonomous self-expression and homegrown artistry. As his moniker suggests, he hails from California’s City of Champions, better known as Inglewood. The birthplace of artists like Mack 10 and Shade Sheist, Inglewood has proven to be fertile ground for the cultivation of a new wave of local acts, the most energetic of which is undoubtedly J-Cali. The self-described “black skater” is releasing his inaugural solo project, Californication, on March 2nd, with the aptly titled “The Beginning” as his first single. With contemporaries A$AP Rocky and Yelawolf as some of his artistic influences, J-Cali’s music sits right on the pulse of inventive hip-hop, something which the 22-year-old will continue to create as his burgeoning career takes off.
