Inspired by poet and activist Nikki Giovanni, specifically the famed poem 'Ego tripping (there may be a reason why), Jamila Woods has returned to gift us with more art in the form of her latest "Giovanni" single.

Still using her music to underscore the sanctity of womanhood, Jamila delivers on an accompaying video with "Giovanni"  as she co-directs alongside Vincent Martell, opening up with word of wisdom from her grandmother, also known as Gramma J and ending with words from Jamila's own mother.

“‘Giovanni’ is a song about owning & celebrating all the parts of myself," says the Chicago-bred songstress in a  press release. "It’s about legacy and lineage, and how the love & strength of the people who made me makes me feel invincible.”

Quotable Lyrics

Little bitty, you want to call me
A hundred motherfuckers can’t tell me
How I’m supposed to look when I’m angry
How I’m supposed to shrink when you’re around me
Permission denied to rearrange me
I’m am the Kingdom, I am not your Queen
Hotep better step from up around me
I am not your rib, I am not your Eve
