After being diagnosed with kidney disease in September 2015, Philly veteran Freeway was determined to come out in 2016 guns blazing. He kicked off the year with the release of his mixtape Fear of a Free Planet. On April 29, he will release an album called Free Will. This glorious Wednesday morning he liberates the album's lead single "Hot as Ice" in an HNHH premiere.
"Hot As Ice" (a nod to one of Freeway's nicknames, Freezer) utilizes bell and choir elements to create a church vibe, as if Freeway is rapping from the pulpit. He's spitting straight fire and brimstone, undoubtedly motivated by his recent brush with mortality. Since the diagnosis, he has started exercising and adhering to a regimented diet. He is on the transplant list awaiting a new kidney. "My family is my main motivation to keep pushing," he says. "I can't let them see anything defeat me.”
Kidney disease affects one in 10 people worldwide. Freeway is working with The National Kidney Foundation, World Kidney Day and the American Kidney Fund to spread awareness in the inner city about the importance of kidneys to good health.
Freeway was always a real one. Stream "Hot as Ice" and let us know what you think in the comments.
Roc a Fella was our old sponsors
And we do it by ourselves but its still proper
On a higher level we don't got the same problems
Got a lawyer spanked the case like his name Cochran
