We don't blame you for getting swept up in all that Super Slimey hype, but it would be wise to remember that Dreamville's EarthGang have also come through with some new music today. In fact, the Johnny Venus and Doctur Dot fronted duo have already released the Rags EP last September, promising it would set off a trilogy of upcoming and conceptually linked EPs. Today, the Atlanta homies have come through with Robots, the second installment of the trifecta, which is set to conclude with Royalty before year's end. The project may be a modest six tracks, but Doctur Dot has assured fans that each chapter makes up part of a "deconstructed album."
The idea of a concept album is clearly one that appeals to both Venus and Dot, and the latter broke down his appreciation for the lost art of musical narratives: “What I’m interested to see is how many people play ’em all back to back and play the story through and see … Those kind of conversations are my favorite. Those are the people that pick out the details and interpret shit their own way. It’s my favorite part of doing this shit ‘cause I don’t never tell someone they’re wrong. I think that’s dope. I ain’t think about it that way. That’s my favorite part.”
Despite its role in the context of a larger album, Robots stands on its own, and there are far worse ways to spend twenty-two minutes. If you're familiar with J Cole's latest signees, you'd know that EarthGang are some of the best emerging lyricists in the game, dare I say reminiscent of a new-age OutKast. There's no denying that Atlanta is running the game, but EarthGang is quietly making a case that the lyricists having something to say.
