Vince Staples' "Prima Donna" (Review)
Vince Staples' music has always been jarring and arresting, but that's usually thanks to his voice and his words more than any of the instrumentals he chooses. Sure, 2014's "Blue Suede" is built around a synth line that sounds like an air-raid siren, but is that more hair-raising than hearing a 21-year-old rap the line, "Hope I outlive the red roses"?
Vince Staples Shares "Prima Donna" Release Date, Tracklist & Artwork
Vince Staples has announced that his Prima Donna EP, his first release since his groundbreaking debut album, last year's Summertime '06, will be out on August 26. He has also revealed the EP's 6-song tracklist as well as its cover artwork. The tracklist shows features from Kilo Kish, who appeared on two Summertime tracks, as well as A$AP Rocky, who will guest on the title track. The newly unveiled cover art shows Vince's huge, ballooned head protruding from a normal-sized neck and body.
Top Tracks: May 30 - June 5
Do you ever get the feeling that hip hop's current class of elites is more of a group of superfriends than ever before? Let's play six degrees of separation with this week's top ten tracks-- the most momentous batch in recent memory. At the top we've got DJ Khaled, who's collaborated with more of rap's A- B- and C-listers in his career than arguably anyone else, and who's accompanied by Drake.
Behind The Beat: DJ Dahi
2015 sometimes felt like one long coronation of Metro Boomin as hip hop's new production king. In the midst of all the (well-deserved!) Metro hullabaloo, DJ Dahi was quietly putting together a career year for himself. If Metro was a colossus who ravaged and reshaped the hip hop landscape with his rolling hi-hats and catalysmic 808s, Dahi was a chameleon who perambulated unseen through the underbrush. He covered an incredible amount of territory last year, with appearances on albums by Travis Scott, Lupe Fiasco, Jazmine Sullivan, Dr.
Iggy Azalea Says Entire Sophomore Album Is Produced By D.R.U.G.S.
Iggy Azalea may be the most widely shat-on artist rapper of our time, but her overall musical catalogue is actually somewhat respectable. Exhibit A -- her 2011 debut mixtape Ignorant Art, produced entirely by Ty Dolla $ign-helmed production collective D.R.U.G.S. (Dirty Rotten Underground Sound).
Mac Miller's Journey To Finish His 3rd Studio Album
Mac Miller is almost done with his third studio album. "It's coming," he said earlier this month. The finish line is in sight, but it took a while for Mac to get to this point. We take a look back at Mac's road to finishing the album, starting nearly 20 months ago when he said he had four half-finished LPs on deck. Indeed, the road has been long and arduous. But, as they say, life isn't a destination, it's a journey.

Stream Little Simz's "AGE 101: DROP 4" EP
Last week, we introduced you to UK spitter Little Simz via her great "Guess Who" video, and today, she's back with a new project. AGE 101: DROP 4 is the fourth and final installment in her series of AGE 101 EPs, and arrives just as she finishes her debut album, as she writes in the Soundcloud description:
Lupe Fiasco & GrandeMarshall Clash Over "Adoration Of The Magi" Beat On Twitter
This morning, Lupe Fiasco dropped off a new track from Tetsuo & Youth, the DJ Dahi-produced "Adoration Of The Magi." Soon enough, someone on Twitter pointed out that the song's beat was almost identical to the one Dahi used on Philadelphia rapper GrandeMarshall's 2012 track "Ellie Fox." One thing
Big K.R.I.T. Reveals That "Cadillactica" Will Have Beats From Jim Jonsin, DJ Dahi And Terrace Martin
Big K.R.I.T. recently rocked the crowd at Seattle radio station KUBE 93's Summer Jam, but before doing so, he sat down with the station's DJ Hyphen to chop it up about his upcoming album, Cadillactica. Somewhat surprisingly, K.R.I.T. (who has always produced his own music) announced that he had recruited Jim Jonsin, DJ Dahi and Terrace Martin to help out with production on the album.
Scoop Deville Discusses Making Beats With Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick has been reluctant to talk at all about his upcoming projects. We don't even know what progress he's made on a follow-up album, if any. However, Scoop Deville, with DJ Dahi and THC are a little more forthcoming. When speaking to VIBE, Scoop said: “We’re in the lab right now and we’re creating music,” Scoop Deville says. “I’m working hard on making a sound for [Kendrick] that is definitely going to take him where he needs to be—musically, sonically—the people are going to feel it. That’s what we do it for—we’re not trying to make hit records.”
Producers To Watch In 2014
2013 was dominated by emerging producers. Mike WiLL Made It and DJ Mustard, who seemed like newcomers at the top of the year, ended things off with major label artist deals, hits with some of the biggest artists in the game. That being said, 2014 could be anybody's year. While some of the artists collected in this list are more renowned than others-- they all have the ability to raise their profile significantly in the next 12 months.
7 Creative Producers You Should Know About
At the beginning of November we did a list that comprised of 9 Creative Rappers You Should Know About. Today we're following up that list with 7 Creative Producers You Should Know About. Producers lack credit across the boards, but they are essential in creating a song, and not just a 'song' but a dope song. A head-bobbing, I-wanna-look-up-the-lyrics-ASAP song is nothing without the beat that carries it.
